The atmosphere of a planet works like a green house in that it traps the light/heat close the planet. Mars has little atmosphere and so the surface is very cold, since there isn’t much heat being trapped. Venus, conversely, has a lot of atmosphere, and so it traps a lot of heat; this is why Venus is intensely hot, with a lava like surface. Earth is pretty much in the middle, which is why we’re warmer than Mars, but not cooking like like Venus.
