Greenpeace, an international environmental advocacy group, produces a guide to electronics annually that rate how the major electronics companies compare in terms of “take-back” (recycling) programs, use of materials, greening of supply chain, consumer awareness. The one in 2010 ranked Apple slightly higher than Microsoft, but both were ranked behind others like Samsung, Nokia. Microsoft withdrew its commitment to phase out BFRs and PVCs in its products, while Apple was simply overtaken by other companies who demonstrated better sustainable practices. Microsoft was missing in the latest one in 2011, while Apple maintained its position.
