When done carelessly, it very well can be. Seaweed is found along coasts which are very fragile environments. If over harvested, the loss of seaweed can be very damaging to local habitats. Seaweed, although it may look dead, is actually a habitat in itself, providing homes and subsistance for many organisms. In many areas, the commerical harvesting of seaweed had been banned until recent years.
