Cocos island, a small island of the coast of Australia, is well known to divers and explorers alike for its beautiful coral reefs and diverse marine ecosystems. The island only rises a few feet out of the sea and even a one foot rise in sea levels in the coming years would shrink the island’s land area considerably. Although the island is uninhabitable by humans, losing land to sea should not go unnoticed. Lest we forget the diverse animal populations that exist on these islands alone, or than the loss of small and unique islands like Cocos island represent only the canary in the coal mine when it comes to the dangers of global climate change.
