Yes. The Coast Guard has participated in every U.S. conflict since 1790. For the most part, they are used for search and rescue, law enforcement (dealing with drugs, illegal immigration, marine safety, etc.) and homeland security. 8,500 Coast Guard “reservists,” have been deployed for active duty since 9/11. The Coast Guard’s Deployable Operations Group (DOG) are a special-force unit much like the Navy SEALS, and their duties include anti-terrorism operations, pollution control, diving operations, and law enforcement.
