It’s not as bad for the environment as biomass burning in it’s roughest sense, that is burning wood, leaves, and other natural things. Biomass burning can be refined and made to be much more efficient than coal power. Since biomass is living growing things, if it was grown as an energy crop it would recycle its own CO2 outputs.
In the end, coal is the most damaging energy source for the Western world, which has the technological abilities to get cleaner energy. In the developing world, traditional biomass burning, cooking fires, is the primary way to heat homes and prepare meals.
