Yes. More specifically, a method of coal mining called “retreat mining” is said to be the most dangerous by Kentucky mining-safety officials. In this method, some coal is left in the mining process as supports to keep the roof of the mine from caving in. When the area is completely depleted of coal, the supports themselves are mined. The reason it is still in use is because coal companies claim that the coal removed from the supports is “pure profit.”
