This table has the open market price for coal at about $30 per short ton, which doesn’t seem very expensive to me.
Coal prices vary dependent upon the kind of coal, region, method, and quality. Coal is ranked dependent upon the amount of carbon it contains, and therefore the heat it can produce. The types of coal are lignite, subbituminous, bituminous, anthracite. The prices for 2008 were the following perspectively: $16.50, $12.31, $51.40, and $60.76 per ton. Compared to other heating methods, this is not expensive.
