Coal is a fossil fuel that takes millions of years to form. It is a great source of energy and derives from plant remains dating back to 400 million years ago. It is also a sedentary rock. I hope my response clarifies any misconceptions. Thank you.

Oil is also a fossil fuel that takes millions of years to form. It is also a great source of energy and derives mostly from plant remains dating back to 400 million years ago, and rarely a bit longer. Coal is not derived from oil, however – both have similar origins but their histories are quite different.

Also, the other answer means to say coal is a sedimentary rock, rather than sedentary.
