Coal ash contributes to cancer, respiratory, and other health problems in people and animals.  Carbon pollution is one of the causes of global warming, which will melt glaciers, dissolve our ozone layer (which will exacerbate the problem of skin cancer), causes respiratory problems, and a long list of other harmful effects.  Without a doubt, they are both harmful to the environment.  Coal ash problems are more localized around the mine or plant compared to the global and atmospheric damage that carbon pollution is causing.
