Is CNG a clean energy source for cars?

CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) is a relatively cleaner source of energy to run vehicles than gasoline. It produces less ozone forming emissions like Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). It is cheaper than gasoline ($1.40/therm to $1.78/gallon), abundant and easy to extract and transport. However, transportation of CNG requires construction of pipes, which may fragment natural habitats and endangered wildlife.
