Is the air cleaner now that we don’t have lead in our gasoline?

The air has a lower lead concentration since the banning of leaded gasoline, but it certainly isn’t cleaner. Over half the nations population live in areas of the country whose air quality does not meet the national health standard for smog. Gasoline is comprised of over two hundred chemicals, most of which are toxic or hazardous. If you count carbon dioxide as a pollutant, then air quality has been getting consistently worse as the number of vehicle-miles traveled around the world keeps increasing.
