Is clean diesel for real? Or is it a joke like clean coal?

Clean diesel is low-sulphur diesel developed to be cleaner than normal diesel. The technologies still use diesel, which inherently is a carbon-based fuel. However, newer vehicles can use diesel much, much more efficiently than older vehicles and companies like volkswagen and BMW are saying they can create diesel cars that now get 60 miles to the gallon or more. Beyond that biodiesels are often made from fryer oil or other waste products reducing the amount of CO2 that would be produced by using fossil-fuel sourced diesel.
