Is clay good for absorbing water?

Clay is a very broad term that applies to over 30 different mineral families that are each
a spectrum of compositions. The properties change as composition changes. Most clay particles
in soil have a chemical attraction to water, they will grab onto water molecules as the water
passes by. Some clays, particularly some found in Texas and other parts of the West, actually
can hold so much water that they swell up when they get wet.
