John Muir (1838-1914) has been referred to as the “Father of our National Parks” and was the leading environmentalist of his time. His work inspired fellow naturalist Theodore Roosevelt to creat Yosemite, Sequoia, Mt. Ranier, Petrified Forest and Grand Canyon National Park. Muir also established the Sierra Club in 1892 and served as President until his death.

A more modern figure in environmentalism is Al Gore, former Vice President of the U.S.. Gore won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for his work promoting research and awareness regarding climate change and the policies needed to confront it. He also produced a popular documentary called “An inconvenient Truth” which focussed on the subject.

In addition to Al Gore, a modern figure playing an important role in environmentalism is Van Jones, an environmental advocate and attorney. In 2009, he was appointed to the White House Council on Environmental Quality and has made strides in the field of green jobs.
