I’m not sure about traditional city planning, but Green and Sustainable city planning is becoming more popular.
With the increased knowledge about urban sprawl and sustainability, cities are trying to becoming more sustainable. The link below goes to an article about sustainable city planning and uses New York’s plan as an example. There is also a sustainability planning toolkit for cities. (2nd link).
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of urban and regional planners is expected to increase by 19%, a rate considered faster than average, between 2008 and 2018. The BLS also noted that the best opportunities will involve compliance with environmental regulations or management of issues like storm water and population growth.
