According to 2006 data collected by the Union of Concerned Scientists, China was the leader in carbon dioxide emission with 6017.69 million metric tons.
An important consideration to make regarding the volume of China’s carbon emissions is that a significant proportion of the emissions are the result of producing exports for Western countries to consume. According to a soon to be published article http://www.cicero.uio.no/webnews/index_e.aspx?id=11095 of the increase in emissions production from China from 2002-2005, half was attributable to exports. Only 7% of the increase in emissions were caused by China’s domestic population.
This information indicates both a higher culpability for the Western countries in causing climate change as well as the incredible extent of our global interdependence.
