Is China greener than Japan?

By most measures, Japan would have to be considered the “greener” of these two countries.  Japan has long been a global leader in energy efficient technology, partly because it is an island country with relatively few natural resources of its own, and so conservation has become a natural part of Japanese culture.  Because of Japan’s close proximity to China and expertise in green technology, the island nation has great potential to help China develop more sustainably.  In fact this is already beginning to happen, as China and Japan have signed at least 42 agreements designed to help transfer environmentally friendly technology from Japan to China.  It’s to be hoped that this will benefit both countries, with Japan finding new export markets for their green technology in China, and China developing more efficiently and sustainably with help from their nearest already industrialized neighbor.
