Actually, plant-based proteins such as those that come from legumes (beans, peanuts, etc.) are the cheapest to produce. When feeding plant matter to any animal, many of the calories are consumed in the animal’s daily functions instead of being converted into protein. Growing soy is one of the most efficient ways to produce protein. Unfortunately, soybeans are also being genetically modified, so you should be careful when buying soy products.
Eggs are also a great source of protein, and less expensive to produce than chicken meat. Plus, if you have chickens in your back yard like I do, they will digest your kitchen scraps for you and give you fertilizer for your garden as well as eggs.
