Chesapeake Bay has been the subject of intense conservation efforts to reduce pollution in the productive estuary. Because population in the area around the Bay continues to increase, nitrogen levels rise despite clean-ups and improved sewage treatment technology. The sources of this nitrogen are lawn fertilizer, agriculture, industrial and automotive air pollution.
