Diesel burns cleaner because the engines require less overall to burn per mile. Diesel itself is dirtier than gasoline, due to the fact that it is cruder than gasoline (thicker and less refined). This causes diesel to produce more “smog-forming pollutants and toxic particulate matter, also known as soot.” So overall there is less CO2, but there are other kinds of pollutants that diesel has that gasoline does not.
