Chalk is made up of the mineral calcite, a naturally occuring substance. While sprinkling a lot of chalk dust over an ecosystem probably wouldn’t be the best thing for it, overall chalk dust is not harmful for the environment. Depending on where it occurs, chalk as a sedimentary rock can actually provide evidence of past environments for geologists.
