Researchers are already observing how global warming is causing habitat shifts in both marine and land environments. As warming continues the problem is only likely to get worse, and this threatens the existence of literally millions of species. Though species can adapt to habitat shifts to a certain extent, extensive global warming would alter habitats around the world much faster than many species could evolve. Further complicating the matter is the fact that human activities have fragmented natural ecosystems, making it harder for wildlife populations to migrate to new areas as climates change. To preserve millions of threatened species across the globe, it is essential that the world begin curbing global warming pollution dramatically.
