You may think that hardwood floors are more harmful to the environment, but they are replaced far fewer times that carpets do. Carpets wear out quickly (especially near doorways), collect dust mites, and easily stain, resulting in many owners replacing their carpet. Waste is never good for the environment. Carpets are often dyed with toxic chemicals and their far worse adhesive and sealant co-conspirators emit nasty pollutants. What is more interesting is that the older your carpet is the worse it is for the environment–a double edged sword.
