Because plants need carbon dioxide to photosynthesize, that would be the obvious answer, but they also need water, which contains oxygen. Plants can survive fine if there were no oxygen in the atmosphere, but they need atoms of both Carbon and Oxygen is some form to produce energy and therefor, be alive, so you cannot distinguish one as being more important or necessary to life than the other.
