Car sharing can be an effective tool for greening transportation. For one, it removes that approximately 10% of energy usage that producing a car takes. It also makes it easier for people to get through the vast majority of their lives without a car, reducing trips with the car to absolutely necessary situations. It also means having efficient vehicles when the cars are actually used. Car shares can be a great way to get people to give up their cars when they don’t really need them, which can be great. Where they may not be so good is in situations where people were getting by fine without cars, but now can use them as a convenience. They are probably not necessary in a city like New York, and might actually increase emissions there, but in most places, they can be a great thing.
