Your clothes will get cleaner but not as clean. Just like washing your hands, body, or dishes with only water, they are not as clean as with soap. Detergent helps to get out stains and body odor smells.
The agitation your clothes get is what really makes them clean. Detegent does help with stains and smells, but most people actually use way too much detergent. Try reducing the amount of detergent you use by half and see if you notice any difference.
I think soap is necessary for good hygiene, but you can choose wisely; use Dr. Bronner’s liquid soap, which completely biodegradable and quite versatile in all the ways it can be used (shampoo, body wash, laundry soap, etc.)
