The cheapest way to produce hydrogen is with natural gas, primarily through a process called reformation. Natural gas contains methane, which is a carbon molecule plus four hydrogen molecules. In steam-methane reforming, the methane reacts under pressure to form hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and a tiny amount of carbon dioxide. Two further steps produce more hydrogen and finally purify it. Another process called partial oxidation can also be used to produce hydrogen.
