It is quite doubtful that a racehorse is as happy as the average grazing horse.
Horses have very complex systems and are highly prone to injury and/or illness. Thus, they require a great deal of maintenance to stay in racing condition. These conditions can be quite harsh, and training a horse to race is a very different experience for a horse than recreational exercise. (Consider the difference between a recreational runner and an Olympic marathon runner or sprinter.) Horses face severe strain and stress while training, and they are fed an enhanced diet to ensure optimum performance.
There are so many sites and organizations out there dedicated to the humane treatment of horses, and many of them condemn horseracing completely. It’s difficult to find unbiased information out there.
