Importation of wood chips and pellets in the UK are expected to increase dramatically, 50 million metric tons by 2017, as the country seeks to convert more power to that of renewable resources particularly in its commercial sector. Wood chips and pellets are a preferred biomass there because of low cost and reliability. However the transportation of lumber from countries like Ukraine and Canada, is costly in itself.
Other countries in the EU like the Netherlands, Cyprus, Luxemburg and more will be significant importers of biomass as they venture into increased consumption of renewable energies with little inland resource to do so.
