You can remove a rib and live, sure. People sometimes have to do this if their rib bone(s) are too damaged that they wouldn’t heal normally (and also people do this for improving their figure, apparently — when I researched it, all the hits came back about women having this done as a type of figure enhancing plastic [or non-plastic] surgery). As long as they don’t get punched in the chest and let the blow directly impact the internal organs, there is no reason why people can’t live without one or more of their ribs.
