Preservation and conservation are very similar concepts when it comes to the environment. To conserve is to protect from loss or harm, or to use sparingly. To preserve to to protect from harm, to keep safe, or maintain intact. So when you are conserving the environment you are protecting it from loss and when you are preserving it you are protecting it from harm. These terms can be used interchangeably, except int certain situations like conservation of resources or preservation of habitat. You can preserve and conserve the forest.
