Bison are legally hunted in the American states of Wyoming and Montana, and the Canadian province of Alberta. They allow it in order to cull herds to target population and to make sure that wild bison do not mingle with domestic herds (thus sharing diseases with).
In the United States, buffalo hunting is legal (though the legal policy differs from place to place) and is restricted to designated areas where the target populations want to be reached and there are too many buffalo in excess.
