Can you get in trouble for hitting a deer with your car?

It might very based on local laws, but there is no federal law against it, and, at least in California, there are no state laws against it. Even if there were laws against it, they are effectively unenforceable, unless you are caught in the act. Other than legal repercussions, it is very bad for a car to hit an animal going any speed, it is likely to do significant damage to your vehicle. This could cause you to get in trouble with friends, family members, or environmentalists.
