Yes. Scientists are using yeast and mixing it in huge vats with biomass, like corn. This helps the biomass to ferment and ethanol fuel is produced. Scientists are working on specific strains of yeast, to develop ones that will ferment much larger amounts of biomass and more efficiently. The only questionable part about this is the yeast strains are bioengineered. Having organisms in the environment like that have unknown consequences to the environment. The anti-GMO (genetically modified organisms) movement is huge.
