Technically, we could do that, but in this economy, it would be a very difficult sell. While Obama is trying to scrape together money for health care and assistance programs, taxing for green buildings would be very difficult. However, there are other ways to provide funding for green building. Taxes on everyday items that are not essential or healthy (like Obama’a cigarette tax or his at one time proposed soda tax) serve to limit the purchase of these items as well as raise money for essential programs. If we were to tax items that are harmful to the environment, perhaps we could use that money for green building. Also, one of the most effective ways to get people to go green is offer incentives and write-offs for projects like green building. (Cheaper materials, tax breaks, etc.)
