Not without consequences for the environment (they could potentially be burned as a fuel source and let the heat operate a steam powered turbine/generator hookup, but burning plastics releases harmful gases into the environment). The easiest thing to do with plastic water bottles and grocery bags is to just recycle them— or better yet—reuse them! Or if we really wanted to be smart about the environment and our energy consumption we could probably just stop manufacturing plastics for this purpose altogether (or at least see to it that all plastics manufactured were made from at least a certain amount of recycled products — maybe set the bar at 30 % and work our way up to 100% over the next 15 – 25 years — but we’ve got to do something fast… we’re running out of time…:(
