There are many technical barriers to human settlement on mars. There still aren’t good answers to such questions as “what effect will lower levels of gravity have for humans over long spans of time?”, and “What effects will extra exposure to radiation (due to the thinner Martian atmosphere) have on humans?” Until these, and other, questions are adequately answered, the goal of human settlement on Mars would have to be seen as unrealistic.
