Can we retrofit the cities of today to make a greener tomorrow?

One step, that is happening all over already, is to add green roofs. This reduces the heat island effect and reduces cooling loads. Painting roofs white will help too, but having actual plants is better.
Another step is to reduce the dependence on cars. Implementing public transportation systems will go a long way toward a greener tomorrow.

When sidewalks need to be repaired, we should try to use pervious materials to make the pavement. Pervious materials will allow a certain percentage of precipitation to be absorbed into it and go through to the water table. This will slow down the speed that water goes into sewers, and can prevent Combined Sewer Overflows, which is when sewer water overflows into and pollutes bodies of water with wastewater.
