Can we replace coal with natural gas?

Theoretically yes, we could close down every coal power plant and switch over to using natural gas in it’s place, but in reality this wouldn’t work. The main reason is that burning coal produces a lot more energy than natural gas, there also is a lot more coal than natural gas. It would make more sense to switch from coal to nuclear power, or to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, geothermal, or wave power.
