Yes, you can reuse plastic bags just like you can reuse canvas ones. However, I think the idea behind switching to canvas bags has more to do with decreasing reliance on petroleum (plastic is a byproduct of petroleum).
Using and re-using plastic bags is fine as long as they hold up. However, once they get holes or the straps break, you’ll need to switch to a new bag. While the production of plastic bags yields emissions and compounds that cause harm to the environment, they can be recycled into composit lumber or reprocessed into small pellets or post consumer resin that can be used to make new bags, pallets, containers, and pipes. Many grocery stores have a bin for consumers to place their used bags in that will eventually be recycled.
