The company B9 Energy is in the process of developing a zero carbon output cargo ship with a target goal of selling on the market in 2012. The ship will be built significantly smaller than normal cargo ships, weighing about 3,000 tons. It will utilize sail and wind power and engines running off of liquified methane and natural gas.
As with much truely carbon neutral technology, a carbon neutral ship has existed for centuries–the sail boat. In part, its a matter of combining the choice new technology with time tested old technology to come up with the technologies most appropriate for us to adopt–similar to the ship bemodal described above.
