Can we make a natural toothpaste at our house?

    Some great natural household substances can be used as toothpaste, including the popular baking soda and peroxide combo. It doesn’t taste the greatest, but really is a great cleanser for teeth.

    Yes.  A sugar-free and non-toxic recipe is to mix 3 parts baking soda with 1 part table salt.  Add 3 teaspoons of glycerine for every 1/4 cup of the powder mixture.  Add water to make a thick paste and use just like regular toothpaste.  If you don’t like the taste, various mint oils or other flavorings can be added to improve it. 

    Glycerine can be acquired at many pharmacies or craft stores that sell soap-making supplies.

    Flouride is a common ingredient included in toothpaste in order to prevent cavities.  If using some of the homemade receipes above, one of the added benefits is that many American communities have flouride already existing in the drinking water supply.  You can also check your municipal water supplier for more information.
