The way to make glass from sand is to shovel the sand into a hot furnace, which turns the sand particles into liquid. Then, this liquid glass is ladled into a drum of cold water. When this part of the process occurs, the liquid bubbles and bursts. The process is a long, delicate one, but when you find sand in a desert, it does not have to be altered. It can directly be converted into glass using this process.
You can actually find glass already in the sand of the desert! When lightning strikes sand, it forms fulgurites. They are natural, so usually you wont find them smooth and polished. But they are sure to be unique!
