No, we can’t grow coal to make power. We have technology that can artificially create conditions that will make a pretty low quality coal, but that requires more energy in itself than the coal that was made would provide. For energy producing coal we need naturally made coal that takes millions of years to make.
Most of the coal we obtain from the Earth was produced long ago during the Carboniferous Period. This was an age where coal swamps were abundant. Coal forms from plant matter falling on top of each other faster than it can decay, then being buried under the Earth’s crust, which creates high temperatures and pressures.
