Yes, cartilage has been successfully grown in labs due to stem-cell research. Although, the cartilage has not been put to use in any humans yet. Currently, professor Kyriacos Athanasiou, chair of the UC Davis Department of Biomedical Engineering and his colleagues, are experimenting with various chemical and mechanical stimuli to improve its properties. The long term goal is to use the created cartilage to repair damaged knee joints. Cartilage is one of the very rare tissues that lacks the ability to heal itself.
