Can we call coal clean if we still mine it how we are currently doing it?

Clean coal is coal that has been processed to produce fewer emissions and reduce impurities through various “cleaning” technologies.  Coal washing removes unwanted minerals and is done before the coal is burned.  Wet scrubbers remove sulfur dioxide, a source of acid rain.  There are other technologies as well that attempt to reduce the negative impacts of coal.

But you are correct in thinking that coal mining is destructive– especially surface mining.  Coal is a dirty source of fuel, but it the source of most of our electricity.  Until we replace it with something just as efficient and just as cheap, it will likely remain so.
