Can the way we design cities encourage more walking?

Yes, we can make more more convenient and safer paths for pedestrians. For example, streets must be easily navigated, intersections not too far apart, and smaller blocks. To encourage walking, the cityscape should also be pleasant, meaning there should be more plants or trees and easy-to-read signs. However, the most important factor to encourage walking in the city is safety. To ensure maximum safety, streets need “well-marked crosswalks and synchronized traffic-control signals”. Safety officials should also patrol the pedestrian walkways.
