Can wave power be used to propel ships?

    Yes.  Currently one such ship exists, the Suntory Mermaid, which was engineered at Tokai University in Japan.  The boat has two fins which harvest wave energy similar to the way a dolphin swims.  The boat, which is made of recycled aluminum allow, relies on no diesel or petrofuel for propulsion.  Although the prototype was built in 2008, more wave powered boats have not yet followes.  A diagram of the ship’s propulsion system can be seen here:
