The technology exists to turn much of the waste generated from agriculture into fuel for electricity – and though some areas have already begin implementing this kind of energy generation, there’s still lots of room for this practice to expand. Animal waste, for instance, can be used for electricity generation, with multiple environmental benefits. Today, much of the waste from animal feedlots is stored in massive lagoons where it is a serious pollution hazard. Animal waste in a lagoon also breaks down to make methane – a greenhouse gas with even more heat-trapping potential than carbon dioxide. By turning this waste into energy, we can not only reduce that source of pollution, but also reduce the need for energy generated from coal and other fossil fuels.
